Roof Damage After Severe Weather
Wind and trees do most of the harm here. The May 27–28, 2017 Memorial Day weekend derecho gave Memphis its third-largest power outage ever, nearly 175,000 customers, with considerable tree damage and gusts of 61 and 67 mph at Memphis International Airport (NWS). On October 21, 2019, an EF-1 tornado with peak winds near 105 mph ran about 7.4 miles from the airport area into East Memphis, damaging roofs and downing trees (NWS).
Storms on December 10–11, 2021 brought 60–70 mph winds to the metro, and on March 31, 2023 storms uprooted trees in Germantown and Memphis (NWS). On June 25, 2023, a supercell thunderstorm cut power to about 122,000 MLGW customers, with restoration over several days (MLGW). On May 9, 2024, NWS estimated 70–80 mph straight-line winds north of Millington along the Shelby–Tipton County line.
The Tennessee Climate Office reported ten inches of snow at the airport in February 2021, and the January 22–27, 2026 storm left nearly 5 inches each of snow and sleet near Cordova (NWS).

What This Covers
- Lifted and missing shingles. Strong gusts can crease tabs or peel sections away, leaving the deck open to rain.
- Limb strikes. A fallen branch can crack decking or rafters. Once a tree service clears it, a roofer can judge the structure.
- Ice and heavy sleet. Weight, sagging gutters and water backing up at the eaves can follow a winter storm.
- Other storm marks. Loose flashing, torn vents, dented gutters and occasional hail are worth noting too.
The Cost of Storm Damage Roof Replacement
A storm-ruined roof is priced like any replacement.
| Cost row | Figure | Source (year) |
|---|---|---|
| Tennessee 3-tab shingles, per sq ft | about $4.60 | RoofObservations, 2026 |
| Tennessee architectural shingles, per sq ft | about $5.05 | RoofObservations, 2026 |
| Tennessee premium shingles, per sq ft | about $6.25 | RoofObservations, 2026 |
| Tennessee exposed-fastener metal, per sq ft | about $6.75 | RoofObservations, 2026 |
| Tennessee standing-seam metal, per sq ft | about $10.45 | RoofObservations, 2026 |
These are statewide 2026 averages, not a Memphis price list; the cost calculator turns them into a planning range.
How the Job Unfolds
- Make the house safe. Keep clear of downed lines and report outages to the utility.
- Take photos. Shoot each side of the house, yard debris, gutters, ceiling stains and the attic if safe, with dates.
- Limit more water. Your policy may expect reasonable steps. Keep receipts.
- Request a roofer. Use the form or call (901) 555-0163. One independent local roofer gets in touch, looks the roof over and writes up what it finds.
- Compare and decide. Read the estimate beside your insurer's paperwork.

What You Can Expect
Expect a calm process: this site sends no one to your door. A roofing company pays this site for each referral; you neither pay us nor receive anything.
Look the roofer up on verify.tn.gov: in Shelby County, a $3,000 to $24,999 job needs a state Home Improvement license, and $25,000 or more a state contractor license. Ask for proof of insurance, a written contract and written warranties.
How an Insurance Claim Usually Works
You report the loss, and your insurer sends its own adjuster. A roofer can record the damage with photos and measurements and write an estimate, but the claim stays between you and your insurer, or a licensed public adjuster or attorney you hire. Public adjusters hold a separate state license, and a roofing contractor can't act as one.
You pay your own deductible. If anyone offers to cover or waive it while billing your insurer the full price, treat that as a red flag; misstating a claim to an insurer can be insurance fraud.
If a roofing contract will be paid from your claim and the insurer denies any part of it in writing, Tennessee gives you three business days after that written denial to cancel. Tennessee law also limits payment before coverage is confirmed. More on the Tennessee roofing rules page.

Common Questions
Should I climb up and look after a storm?
No. Wet shingles, loose debris and hidden deck damage make a storm-hit roof unsafe. Look from the ground, check the attic for damp spots, and leave close-up work to the roofer. Photos taken from the yard still help.
Does wind damage always mean a full replacement?
No. A few lifted shingles or loose flashing can often be repaired. Replacement comes up when damage is widespread, decking is broken, or the roof was already near the end of its life. The repair-or-replace quiz can help.
How do I avoid a bad deal after a storm?
Be wary of anyone who wants cash first, pushes you to sign before your insurer has looked, or offers to take care of your deductible. Look up the roofer's license on verify.tn.gov and take the paperwork home to read.
Is there storm aid available for my roof?
This site can't promise any. Shelby County was later included in the federal disaster declaration for the January 2026 winter storm, but that is history, not an open offer. Your homeowner's policy is the usual route, so call your insurer.
