A Clear Path to a New Roof in Memphis

Memphis is largely a city of renters: just 44.9% of homes are lived in by their owners (Census). For the many owners in East Memphis, Cordova, Midtown and the suburbs, a roof is often the biggest repair a house ever asks for. The aim here is a calm first step: one request, one roofer.

Nobody at this site climbs a ladder, prices a job, writes a contract or touches an insurance claim. The roofing company that receives your request pays this site for each referral; you never pay and never receive anything.

What Happens After You Reach Out

  1. Tell us about the roof. Use the form or call (901) 555-0163 with the address and what you've noticed.
  2. One roofer gets your request. Only one independent Shelby County roofing company sees it.
  3. The roofer comes out. The roofer inspects and measures the roof, then explains what it found.
  4. You read a written estimate. Many roofers give estimates at no charge; ask the roofer. Sign only when the price, scope and materials make sense.

Warning Signs Worth a Look

None of these proves a roof is finished, but each is a reason for a roofer to look closer.

  • Curling or cracked shingles. West Tennessee summer heat can bake shingles until the edges lift or split.
  • Grit in the gutters. Granules washing out of the downspouts can mean the shingle surface is wearing thin.
  • A stain on the ceiling. A brown ring after heavy spring rain often traces back to flashing, a vent or a valley.
  • Limbs over the roof. Big shade trees can drop branches in wind or under ice.
  • A dip in the roofline. A sag can mean wet or weakened decking below, so have it checked soon.

Not Sure the Roof Needs Replacing?

Plenty of Memphis roofs need a patch, not a tear-off. The repair-or-replace quiz asks five quick questions about age, material, damage, recent storms and past repairs, then points to a likely next step. It is a starting point only; a roofer standing on the roof is the one who can say for sure.

What to Do After a Storm

In Memphis, roof damage tends to come from wind and falling trees. During the May 27–28, 2017 derecho, the city had its third-largest power outage ever, with nearly 175,000 customers losing power and gusts of 61 and 67 mph at the airport (NWS). On June 25, 2023, a supercell storm left about 122,000 MLGW customers without power (MLGW).

Once it's safe, look from the ground and stay off the roof. Photograph missing shingles, fallen limbs and new ceiling stains, with dates. A roofer can record the damage and price the fix, but the claim stays between you and your insurance company, or a public adjuster or lawyer you choose to hire. You pay your own deductible, and an offer to "cover" it is a red flag.

Ballpark Prices by Material

No source has published a Memphis-only price, so these are Tennessee averages per square foot of roof surface, installed.

Why Use This Service

  • One company, not ten. Your request reaches a single independent roofer, so there's one conversation to follow.
  • Nothing to pay. The roofing company pays this site a referral fee. You pay nothing and receive nothing for using it.
  • Numbers on paper. Ask the roofer for an itemized estimate that covers tear-off, decking, underlayment, ventilation and cleanup.
  • Checks you can run yourself. Look up the roofer's Tennessee license on verify.tn.gov before you sign anything.

Neighboring Towns Covered Too

Requests come from all over Memphis, Cordova and East Memphis included, and from the Shelby County suburbs, each with its own page: Germantown, TN, Collierville, TN, Bartlett, TN, Lakeland, TN and Millington, TN. The service areas page lists the rest.

Memphis Roofs, Memphis Weather

Many early-1900s bungalows and Tudors in Midtown wear steep roofs under old shade trees, many brick ranches have low-slope sections, and many big hip roofs in Cordova and the suburbs are already on their second roof.

The weather adds wear. On October 21, 2019, an EF-1 tornado with peak winds near 105 mph ran about 7.4 miles from the airport area into East Memphis, damaging roofs and bringing down trees (NWS). Winter bites too: in late January 2026, nearly 5 inches each of snow and sleet piled up near Cordova (NWS).

Common Questions

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Memphis?

In Memphis and unincorporated Shelby County, the county's Office of Construction Code Enforcement generally requires no permit to re-roof a single-family home, though sheathing repairs do need one (county policy, 2022). Collierville issues no roofing permits; Bartlett, Lakeland and Millington are worth a call first. Ask the roofer who pulls any permit.

What license should a roofer in Shelby County hold?

Shelby County is one of nine Tennessee Home Improvement license counties. A home roofing job from $3,000 to $24,999 needs that state license; $25,000 or more needs a state contractor license. Search the company on verify.tn.gov and check the license type and status before you sign.

Who pays for this referral service?

The roofing company does. It pays this site a fee for each referral it receives. You never pay us and never receive anything for sending a request. Every price for the roof itself comes from the roofer, in writing, and you decide whether to accept it.

Will my homeowners insurance pay for a new roof?

That depends on your policy and the cause of the damage, and only your insurer decides. A roofer can photograph and estimate the damage for you to share. You pay your own deductible; a contractor who offers to cover or waive it while billing the full price is a red flag.

Can I see a price before a roofer visits?

You can see a rough range. The cost calculator multiplies an estimated roof area by Tennessee averages for shingles or metal and gives a planning range, not a quote. Steep pitches, extra layers and damaged decking push real prices up, so plan around the roofer's written estimate.
